Upcoming Convention Special Events

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

I hope this May Day finds you enjoying good weather and getting ready for the turn of the seasons. For those of our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, shorter days herald the coming of winter, but hopefully, you can get a few more rays of sunshine before the first flakes fall.

In the office, convention preparations take up much of the team's time. On a positive note, scenario development proceeds at a good clip, and we look forward to getting the scenarios into the hands of our convention GMs. As the developers finished with the new special events, they finalized some outstanding points and identified information that would aid player participation. To reach as broad an audience as possible, we decided a short blog that could be linked via social media and other information outlets would be the best option. If you know of someone that would benefit from the information, please pass a link to this blog on to them.

As a general practice, when scheduling the special events at PaizoCon, Origins, and Gen Con, we separate out each subtier and assign GMs accordingly. This helps with the amount of prep work needed by the GM, and it makes sure we have the right number of tables at each sub-tier. As registration for these events open, please know we are watching the ticket sales and will make adjustments to the number of tables in each subtier accordingly. It is important to register for events in a subtier you are willing and able to play, as the opportunity for trading levels is almost non-existent onsite. Reminder for those playing #10-98: Siege of Gallowspire, not only are tickets sold by subtier, they are divided up into Soldier and Champion. See the entry below for more information on those terms.

I turn now to our team of developers working on the special events—Organized Play Lead Developer John Compton and Society developers Linda Zayas-Palmer and Thurston Hillman—for specific scenario details.

Pathfinder Society (1st edition) #10-98: Siege of Gallowspire (For Levels 5-16)

Soldier is a little bit harder than a typical Pathfinder Society Special. Champion is a full-on Hard Mode.

Regarding other characters. You can bring up to three additional PCs of level 5-20 to the game. These PCs are called Aid Characters. Aid Characters can generate more powerful aid tokens, and they can also participate in special Aid Missions. The higher level the Aid Character, the better they are likely to do at challenges.

The only thing you need to bring for an Aid Character is that PC's most recent Chronicle sheet fully filled out. You may want to bring their character sheets too, particularly if you don't remember the characters that well and you'd like to roleplay them a bit. Aid characters must be your own PCs.

If you don't have PCs at the appropriate level, you can instead enlist the aid of 4th level NPC Pathfinders by using the iconic pregenerated characters. These NPCs aren't as capable as your own PCs would be, but they can still help out.

You may have heard from previous discussions of the idea of changing which PC you are playing mid-session. That is no longer part of the scenario.

Check here for more information!

Starfinder Society #2-00: Fate of the Scoured God (For Levels 1-10)

We're pleased to announce that the upcoming Starfinder Society interactive special (Starfinder Society #2–00: Fate of the Scoured God) is going to be a repeatable event! Unlike typical scenarios with the Repeatable tag, this event is repeatable once over its three Tier ranges (Tiers 1–4, Tier 5–8, and Tier 9–12) giving players multiple opportunities to experience this momentous adventure throughout the coming convention season. We're excited to provide players attending numerous conventions (such as Origins and Gen Con) a chance to run or play in this event multiple times, and for credit!

Pathfinder Society (2nd edition) #1-00: Origins of the Open Road (For Level 5)

When Starfinder Society launched in 2017, we featured a special prologue adventure that helped set up the upcoming stories we would tell in the first year—all while giving players a taste of higher-level play with pregenerated characters. Two years later, we're kicking off Pathfinder Society's second edition campaign in much the same way in Pathfinder Society Scenario #1-00: Origin of the Open Road, with the PCs playing 5th-level pregenerated iconic characters who uncover forgotten secrets of the Society in the arcane capital of Quantium. Even though this is a special adventure, it's not an exclusive scenario; run and play it at any venue.

Until later—Explore, Report, Cooperate!

Excellent....

I'm kind of disappointed to hear that the character switch-out has been removed from 10-98. We have a group that has been trying really hard to get two characters each to the 15-16 tier for that exact purpose.

But I still expect it to be a blast.

Bah, I can't bring my lvl 21 cleric as an Aid character :/

Everything else sounds awesome though.

Origins of the Open Road sounds like a great idea! Looking forward to adventuring in Quantium.

Anxious to hear more about the 'Origin of the Open Road' special. I am glad to see that it can be run anywhere by anyone. I do plan on playing 2e, however, I don't see myself playing it as often as I did with 1e.

We shall see, though.

I gave Starfinder a good try by playing and GMing several games. Unfortunately, I found it too campy.

I will get to ride again... almost!!!

Fate of the Scoured God is for Levels 1-10 but has a 9-12 Tier?

Typo! It is for 1-12.

So very happy to have SFS 2-00 be repeatable. Thank you.

I am also really looking forward to PFS2E 1-00, even more so with the hint of buried secrets.

Technically, level 21 doesn't exist in Pathfinder, so you're all good to bring them as a level 20 character :)

A clarification here: while its assumed that the 4th level iconic characters are helping the group, you do not actually need their pregenerated character sheets.

So for Starfinder #2-00, it's repeatable in each of its level ranges once, but I'm assuming each of the level ranges must be played by a different PC. Is that correct?

Thinking ahead about running these in our region. Which of these specials are multi-table interactives and what will be the table minimum? Will either of the Pathfinder specials have a card game element?

I'm really happy I'm making it to both Origins and GenCon this year :)

Super excited for this! Especially the Starfinder Special!

As a Starfinder Nerd, getting players in small countries such as ours is hard enough, but if we visit other countries, it's really really epic to know we have replay options!

Awesome work!!

I am quite excited for all of those ^^

As a convention organizer, I LOVE a special that is repeatable by tier! Immediately apply this rule to The Cosmic Captive. Literally no one saw all of that adventure :).

Seconded. We need to use all of the content we have, not just part of it.

Yeah, but the different parts of Cosmic Captive weren't tier based, so it's very hard to create tables so that no one plays the same content.

very hard != impossible

This is correct (was clarified on Slack channel but didn't make it into blog post).

I'm not sure where else to post this, I guess the forums have been re-arranged, but there are no events listed for Origins at night time. Nothing from 7pm or later. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

If you are searching with filters you won’t find them (unless Origins changes how their database works). Since the slot ends at midnight which is effectively the next day, it will not display the events in the PM slot. So it might appear like there are no events, but it’s just that the search function does not associate the event times properly. The best thing to do is search the catalog without using the filters. Or if you can download the catalog, search it that way and enter the specific event numbers on the search page.

Wayfinders 2/5 5/55/5 *

I've also noticed that the event numbers in the Catalog don't match the event numbers on the event registration site.

I tried searching by them and nothing came up.

The Exchange 4/5

event number aint working either. just tried

1/5

The event numbers don't work because the event numbers, for sign ups, all start with '1'. They are also completely different than the ones on the list. I wish they would give us the new numbers for the events, so we can search with those.

Looks like the tokens I bought are going to get used.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 **** Venture-Captain, Ohio—Columbus

Suggestion this year is to search by name (only) for Origins events.

The system never worked correctly for the sessions with the 12:00 midnight end time. This confuses the date filter.

And this year Origins folks announced that somehow all the event numbers in the Excel grid are different than the event codes in the system.

The Exchange 4/5

yep, put in siege of gallowspire and clicked rpg. this pulled them up.
